«Everything comes from you [Lord], and we have given you only what comes from your hand» (l Chronicles 29: 14, NW).
HANNAH, ELKANAH’S WIFE, could not conceive, and she lived in a society in which it was considered that God was displeased with women who could not bear children. To add more bitterness to her cup, Elkanah had another wife, whose name was Peninnah, who had not only given Elkanah children, but also never missed an opportunity to provoke her rival. In light of that, Hannah cried and did not eat.
However, one day everything changed. Elkanah and his family had traveled to the tabernacle to worship. While there, Hannah prayed to God and made a vow; saying, «Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life» (1 Samuel 1:10, 11, NIV). Hannah had been unhappy because she could not conceive; but in this prayer she tells God: «If you grant me the joy of having a son, I will give him to You for all the days of his life.» And you know what? God performed a miracle! «Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, ‘Because I asked the Lord for him’ » (v. 20, NIV).
God performed a miracle, and she kept her vow! When the time came to present the boy, Hannah and her husband took young Samuel to Shiloh, brought him before Eli, and Hannah told the priest, «I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord» (vv. 27, 28, NIV).
Isn’t that wonderful? When Hannah finally had the son of her dreams, she gave him to God! Just as the heavenly Father gave His beloved Son, she gave her greatest treasure. Isn’t there a beautiful lesson in this for us? Placing our greatest treasure in God’s hands for Him to use for His glory!
What is your greatest treasure? Would you have the courage to place it in God’s hands right now? You can give it to Him without fear because, if you read the end of this story, you will see that the Lord blessed her and «she gave birth to three sons and two daughters» (l Samuel 2:21, NIV).
God does such amazing things! You will never be able to give God more than He gives you!
Oh, Lord, what can I give You that You have not already given me? At this time, and with the greatest of joys, I place my most precious treasures in Your hands. Please use them to glorify Your name!
