«Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint» (Isaiah 40:30, 31).
WHO CAN WE COMPARE GOD TO? Can you think of anyone or anything? This is the God who measures the waters and the heavens with the palm of His hand, and weighs the mountains and hills with a scale (Isaiah 40:12). The God who «stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in» (v. 22); «who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name» (v. 26, NIV).
Who can we compare Him to? Because as powerful as His arm is to create, just as great is His heart to love. He is the God who cares for His flock, like a shepherd; who in His arms, close to His chest, carries the lambs and gently guides the newborn sheep (v. Il). The God who «gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength» (v. 29).
To whom will we compare the God who rules with power over heaven and earth, and who cares for His children with the same tenderness of a shepherd for his sheep? If you asked Linda Wilson, she would tell you.
It was a Tuesday, September 12, 2006, when Linda got a call. She thought it was Jim, her husband, to wish her a happy birthday. The person calling was a nurse to tell her that her husband had been involved in a serious accident. A vehicle had ventured onto the opposite lane of traffic and crashed into his motorcycle head-on.
Linda arrived at the hospital at midnight, just as Jim was being operated on to save his life. At about 1:00 A.M., the surgeon went to give Linda a preliminary report: «Your husband has only a one percent chance of survival,» he told her.
One percent! When Linda communicated this awful news to family and friends, the pastor comforted her: «God is not limited by percentages, Linda,» he told her. «You must trust in Him, one hundred percent.‘
A one percent chance of survival, and one hundred percent faith to believe in the God of the impossible. After eleven months in the hospital and twenty operations, Jim survived the ordeal. He was even able to walk again! What promise from the Word sustained Linda during her harsh trial? She says it was Isaiah 40:31: «Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength,»
Who can we compare God to? Isn’t it true there is no one like Him?
God of wonders, I praise Your name because You are great and powerful, and because You are not limited by percentages or statistics. Above all, I praise You because being the Sovereign of the universe, You never forget me.
