«Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth you created» (Psalm 119:90, NLT).
Sometimes things get much worse before they change. God called Moses to take the Israelites out of Egypt. Although Moses did not feel capable, he obeyed. What happened immediately afterward? Pharaoh not only refused to let the people go, but he also hardened the slavery to which he was subjecting them. He stopped providing the straw with which to make bricks, but demanded they produce the same quota, and their task masters beat them when they did not meet their quotas. Pharaoh intended for the children of Israel not to have time or energy to dream of being set free. Confused, Moses then asked God: «Why did you send me?» (Exodus 5:22).
Often, when we respond to God’s calling, things get worse and we get confused. However, as Steven Cole writes in his article «The Plan Isn’t Working,» «When you begin to serve the Lord, you’ve joined the infantry. The prince of darkness begins gunning for you. Often things don’t become easier or go more smoothly in your life. Things get more difficult.» That should not surprise or stop us. The enemy’s tactic is the same as Pharaoh’s, but if we give up when faced with difficulties, we will continue being slaves.
When problems come we doubt two things: our calling (Did / understand wrong? Am I the right person for the job?) and God’s faithfulness (Can God free me from this?Does He care?). Responding to Moses, the Lord cleared both doubts: He affirmed in his calling and reaffirmed His love for Israel (see Exodus 6). If things get worse when going in the direction God is calling you to, do not allow the enemy to rob you of the chance to be free. No army can ever stop the Omnipotent! If in faith you depend on His strength, victory is assured.
Dear Lord, when things get worse instead of better, remind me of Your faithfulness toward the children of Israel. When I am tempted to doubt Your calling, remind me that every word that goes forth from Your mouth will not return to You void, but will be accomplished. I will not give up, because You have called me to set me free.
