«By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit» (l John 4:13).
WHO ARE THE MOST USEFUL PEOPLE in service to God? According to a well-known quotation from the Spirit of Prophecy, they are the ones who love Christ the most.
The full quotation reads as follows: «He who loves Christ the most will do the greatest amount of good. There is no limit to the usefulness of one who, by putting self aside, makes room for the working of the Holy Spirit upon his heart, and lives a life wholly consecrated to God.»—The Desire of Ages, ch. 25, p. 250.
Not long ago, I read a story that illustrates this point well. B. Russell Holt recounted it and its main character is Edward Kimball, a shy Bible teacher who loved Christ and who had set out to speak about the Savior to an 18-year-old who worked as a clerk in a shoe store.
It was April 21, 1855, and Kimball was very nervous because he did not know how to present the gospel to another individual. He walked from one end of the street to the other while he wondered if he should go into the shoe store. When he finally entered, he went to the place where the boy was.
Looking him in the eye, he told him plainly of God’s love for him. To his surprise, the young man instantly accepted Christ in his heart and confessed him as his personal Savior.
Who was the boy who worked at the shoe store? Dwight L. Moody, who years later during the 19th century would become the most renowned evangelist in the United States and through whom thousands of people came to know Christ, not only in the United States, but also in Britain and Scotland.
How interesting! Moody’s name is among «the greats» in the history of Christianity. Not like that of Edward Kimball. When I think of this fact, I can’t help but wonder: Will Kimball’s service, unknown to many, have been of as much value to God as what Dwight L. Moody gave to humanity? Above all, I wonder: How many «Kimballs» will there be today in our churches? Ordinary people who, having put the «I» aside, are living «a life wholly to God» and are sharing the love of Christ wherever they go. It will be in heaven that we learn all the good they did for the church and humanity.
Today is a good day to ask God to fill us with His Spirit. Only then will we be able to live in a way that glorifies His holy name.
Heavenly Father, please enable me to allow the Holy Spirit to work in my heart so that I can fully consecrate my life to You.
