«When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites the Lord sent a prophet» (Judges 6:7, 8).
Every time it was harvest time, a horde of Midianites looted them, devouring and destroying everything in their path, like locusts. The Israelites, especially in rural areas, had no way of defending themselves against these attacks. That is why they hid in caves and dens in mountains (see Judges 6:2). Cavemen! God’s chosen people had been reduced to living as cavemen. Why? Because they had forgotten about God. The Midianites and Amalekites attacked them for seven year, leaving no food or cattle alive in Israel.
Then, as a last resort, the Israelites cried out to God.
We generally believe that God called Gideon to deliver the Israelites immediately after this. However, someone was sent before Gideon: a prophet whose name we do not even know (see Judges This prophet paved the way for Gideon’s leadership by giving a difficult but necessary message: Israel had to repent. The real problem was not the Midianites, but the disobedience of the Israelites. We don’t know anything else about this prophet. Absolutely nothing! He gave his message; no name, no applause. He did his part and disappeared from history. That’s how he paved the way for Gideon.
More humility is necessary to do the little tasks. More faithfulness is necessary to fulfill properly the «invisible» roles; when your name is not printed on the list of organizers, when no one thanks you or applauds you. Or worse, when it is another one who takes the honors, who reaps the fruits of your labor. However, in God’s kingdom, the size or popularity of a task does not determine its value. In her book That I May Know Him, Ellen G. White wrote, «The importance of little things is underrated just because they are small, but the influence of the little things for good or evil is great. . Faithfulness in the little things in the line of duty makes the worker in God’s service reflect more and more the likeness of Christ.»—p. 331. This prophet’s faithfulness had a huge impact, even if we do not know his name. He will receive his applause in heaven!
Dear Lord, I want to serve you faithfully in the little tasks for which no one thanks or applauds me. Grant me Your wisdom to understand that the size of a job does not determine its value. Give me patience to do my best, trusting that You will reward me abundantly.
