«But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing» (Matthew 6:3).
Social media has become such an integral part of our lives that it seems that what is not published on them does not exist. If you don’t upload a photo to Instagram, you never climbed that mountain. If you don’t post a comment on Facebook, your relationship isn’t official. We are so conditioned to living in this way, in the account of the fame and extrinsic self-esteem of social media, that Jesus’s invitation seems strange to us. Jesus calls us to join the «secret service,» to be part of a special group of agents who do good without publishing it.
Boaz was a member of this «secret service.» He wanted to help Ruth and Naomi, two poor widows. He could have given Ruth a sack of barley at the gates of the city, in front of the whole village, and thus killed two birds with one stone: the widows would receive food and he, admiration. However, Boaz commanded his workers: «Let her glean even among the sheaves. . . Also let grain from the bundles fall purposely» (Ruth 2:15, 16). Not wanting to humiliate her, he sought a subtle way to help Ruth away from the eyes of the curious. In choosing a secret service, Boaz put his reward in God’s hands: a wise investment! In A Loving Life, Paul Miller said, «The greatest acts of love are almost always hidden. However, Jesus tells us, ‘There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed.’ »
In order to join the secret service, you must believe that God’s approval is worth more than that of other people’s. Don’t get confused; it is not a question of being less ambitious, but of having a better ambition, of wanting an incorruptible crown, not one of withered, dry laurels. Craig Groeschel, in his book Fight, wrote, «Ask yourself this question: At the end of your life, will it really matter how many «Likes» you received? Do you really think you’ll be on your deathbed one day and think: If I’d received three more «Likes» on that photo, I would have reached a hundred . . . and life would have been so good?» When Jesus calls us to the secret service, He does not do so to give us less, but more. Life is not about how many «Likes» we receive, but how much we love.
Dear Lord, teach me to love with integrity and self-sacrifice as you did. I want to join the secret service.
