Whales are very large animals that live in the water, but they don’t have gills to breathe like fish do.
They have lungs, because they are mammals like you and me.
That’s why they can’t breathe in the water—they hold their breath until they come to the surface and take in oxygen again through a small hole on top of their head, called a” blowhole.”
Most whales and dolphins can stay underwater, without breathing, for up to twenty minutes.
But there is a very large whale called a” sperm whale” that can remain submerged in the water for more than an hour without breathing.
Do you remember which biblical character was swallowed by a fish so that he would not drown in the sea? You can read it in the book of Jonah.
God saved Jonah’s life through a big fish, because he had to fulfill a mission.
God had said to Jonah, “Get up, go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it.
I see the evil things they do“(you can read it in Jonah 1:2, ICB).
Jonah did not want to obey God, so he got on a boat going the opposite direction of Nineveh.
But there was a big storm and Jonah finally realized that it was because he was disobeying God.
So, the sailors were frightened and threw Jonah into the sea. The storm immediately calmed down.
Meanwhile, Jonah was drowning, and God used a very large fish (maybe the size of a sperm whale) to rescue him.
Jonah spent three days inside that big fish. It seems incredible, right?
But remember that for God there is nothing impossible!
