«You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness» (l Thessalonians 5:5).
PAUL SAYS that we are children of the light and of the day, that we cannot sleep in the face of the great event that is approaching, while the children of darkness hide and live in the filth of sin, so they are of the night, indifferent or oblivious to the imminent return of the Lord.
To be children of the night is to reject revelation, to live in disbelief, to practice immorality, and to sleep the sleep of death. To be of the darkness means to belong to the enemy, and therefore to act in rebellion against God.
But Paul says we are not children of darkness and night. We are not children of rebellion, disobedience, anger, evil, and death. By redemption in Jesus we are made children of communion, obedience, justice, blessing, resurrection, and life.
Burt says that the light-dark and day-night binomial vertebrates everything from Genesis to Revelation. When everything was darkness, the first words of God recorded in the Scriptures were «Let there be light.» And when Revelation ends with the description of the heavenly city, it says that there will be no more night, and there will be no need of a lamp for light or sunlight, for the Lord God Himself will be our Light.
When mankind gave in to temptation, the devil transformed the world into a filthy, dark place because of sin. Christ came when everything was in spiritual darkness to take us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.
The children of darkness and night live for the present century, governed by the prince of darkness, while the children of light and day live for the coming century, governed by the Prince of Justice and the Light of the World. The prince of darkness has taken a fatal blow, but he continues to rule. This century is dying, but it is not over yet. Until Christ returns in glory, this transient period of coexistence, of darkness and light, of night and day will continue.
There are only two options. Either you are a child of the night or a child of the day, of light or of darkness.
Either you belong to this deciduous world in the process of extinction or the century to come, steps away from its definitive renewal.
The light of the world has already come, but it is coming again.Let us be children of God who do not live for this world that is ending, but for the kingdom that will never end.
