«Submitting to one another in the fear of God” in the fear of God»
IT’S IMPOSSIBLE to end this series of reflections on shared leadership z the home without pointing out as a cornerstone, God’s instructions for the family, expressed in the biblical record with the following words, “submitting to one another in the fear of God. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. . . Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it . . . Children, obey your parents in t5t Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise: ‘that it may be well with you and you by live long on the earth.’ And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord» (Ephesians 5:21, 22, 25; 6:1, 4).
God wants us to be happy in our earthly family, because this is an extension of eternity. Children should obey their parents in everything in the Lord. Children dishonor their parents and God when they take over their role and rebel against authority; likewise, parents should prompt their children to obey without provoking them to math, that is, with Christian authority based on deep love. For their part, wives should not take over the leadership that belongs to their husbands; they should remember at all times that God has made them priests of the family.
Likewise, rough and authoritarian husbands are very far from God’s ideal, even if they think they’re doing what’s right. The Bible is very clear: husbands should love their wives with sacrificial love, like the one Christ showed when He was willing to die for us on the cross.
Husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters will fulfill this ideal when we humbly and meekly allow Jesus Christ to live in our hearts, and through our behavior, His presence becomes evident in the home. Let’s follow His everlasting instructions, valid for the whole family who wants to be part of God’s great family in heaven.
Who should be in charge at home? The spouses who share leadership and follow and practice the gospel’s principles and values and teach their children accordingly so in due course, they can also make wise decisions.
