Do you know what a pentagon is?
It’s a geometric figure that has five sides and five angles. For the Greeks, the first part of this word, «penta,» meant «five .»
What then does «Pentateuch» mean?’ The word «Pentateuch» means five scrolls.
Anciently, it was written on papyrus rolls. Papyrus was a sheet that was taken from the stem of a plant.
That sheet was used to write on, just like we use paper.
Do you know what five books of the Bible make up the Pentateuch* The first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Who wrote the Pentateuch? According to the New Testament, the author of the Pentateuch is Moses, that is why it’s called «the book of Moses.»
By what other names is the Pentateuch known? The Jews regarded these five books as «The book of Moses» and also as «The Book of the Law.»
Why do people say that these five books are one book? Because they are the instructions that God gave to Moses for the people of Israel.
The Jews call these teachings or laws «The Torah.»
Jesus knew the book known as the Torah or the Pentateuch very well. He Himself called it “the Book of Moses»; you can read that in today’s verse.
Write in your Prayer Journal everything you have learned about the Pentateuch.
