«Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associated with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion” (Romans 12:16).
ACHIEVING UNITY in diversity is the most complicated thing in terms of interpersonal relationships, because diversity of personalities and thoughts is as broad as the human being living on the Earth. Jesus’s prayer for His disciples shows His deep concern over this matter, “Holly Father, keep through Your name whose You have give me, that they may be one as WE are” (John 17:11)
The main verse in today’s devotional suggests some of the conditions needed to create unity or harmony. It’s necessary to 1) set aside pride, 2) humble ourselves and 3) surrender all self-sufficiency or the concept of thinking we know more than others. Achieving this is only possible when we feel sheltered, accepted and justified in the everlasting arms. That’s when we experience unity with God that leads us to experience it in all our relationships.
Having unity does not mean abandoning our individuality to adopt uniform behaviors, since diversity enriches human relationships. Having unity is being sensitive to other people’s differences, accepting their vision of life. Only then harmony and friendship can take place. Nobody is complete without the other; and the fact that I am incomplete is precisely the perfect way to come in contact with others, who compliment me.
Children’s games should be an incentive for us. We should continue playing them in spite of our age. Youth full of dreams should help us generate new dreams; from the elderly weary steps we can learn to set aside our foolish haste to reflect, contemplate and rest in the company of God and our loved ones.
Lady, if you have small children or grandchildren, enjoy them and learn from their company the best of their essence. All of them are in your life today for a reason. If you need to feel understood, loved and appreciated, have a close relationship with them. Wisdom coming from a consensus is better than the foolish stance that sometimes leads us to believe we are always right.
Express love by harmoniously joining your love ones, like flowers in a garden, they are all different, but together they display all the sublime beauty God wants to world to see.
