Would you like to see the place where Jesus was crucified? Well, I’ve got to tell you that nowadays we don’t know for sure where it is.
The Bible says it was a mount called Golgotha or Calvary, which means «skull» or «the place of a skull» because some rocks on one of its hillsides were shaped like skulls.
Golgotha was located north of Jerusalem, outside the city walls.
Jesus had to carry the heavy wooden cross to that place. It was a way in which the Romans, who ruled over Jerusalem, humiliated and punished their prisoners.
Although Jesus was innocent, because He hadn’t done anything wrong, they treated Him the same as guilty people, or worse. Jesus hadn’t had anything to eat or drink in a while, He hadn’t rested, and He also had wounds because the Roman soldiers had whipped Him.
Feeling weak, Jesus fell down, and even though they forced Him to get up and carry that heavy cross again, He kept on falling down.
People stared at Him, but nobody dared to help Him. However, Simon of Cyrene, an African man, took pity on Jesus and the soldiers made Him carry Jesus’s cross to Golgotha.
At that moment, Simon felt that Jesus had transformed His heart and he accepted Him as his Savior. We never know when Jesus will «need» us, but will you be willing to help Him with whatever He asks of you like Simon did?
Draw a cross in your Prayer Journal and write your prayer inside it.
