«A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ » (Matthew 22:39).
These tiny birds, also known as colibris, feed on flower nectar. They’re able to figure out the amount of sugar in a flower and decide whether they’ll skip it or not, according to their needs.
This small creature’s habits have served to nickname men or women who also flit «from flower to flower.
There are many reasons for us to constantly want to attract the attention of the opposite sex. I don’t intend to psychologically analyze the behavior or judge without knowing the reasons for every action. However, we should remember that, as children of God, we’re extremely valuable; so valuable that Jesus gave His life for each one of us.
As individuals, we’re made up of several different areas: the physical, social, mental and spiritual areas. They’re all important and should be taken cared of. Our general performance and the strength we have to live lives that honor God will depend on how well those areas perform and how balanced they are.
It’s hard to perform well with a broken heart, or with impure thoughts, while our relationship with God is distant or when our habits harm our health.
But God calls us to take care of our whole being, to value ourselves highly and also value others that way: with all our areas.
Quickly winning over someone’s heart may seem like a victory in the eyes of society, but it’s actually a cruel defeat that denigrates our real concept of human beings.
«To trifle with hearts is a crime of no small magnitude in the sight of a holy God. And yet some will show preference for young ladies and call out their affections, and then go their way and forget all about the words they have spoken and their effect» (Letters to Young Lovers, sec. 6, p. 74).
Both men and women may be guilty of this inconsiderate and selfish behavior that can cause so much pain. May we be careful with our hearts as well as with the hearts of those around us.
It’s a way in which we can portray Jesus’s image and character in a planet where it’s been so disfigured. Let’s not forget: God is love, and we can only learn the truth about that virtue from Him.
