How many places or churches do you know that are named Ebenezer?
You may have heard it many times, but do you know it’s true meaning? Although most people believe that it means «so far the Lord has helped us,» that is not exactly its meaning.
Do you want to know what it means? This Hebrew word that appears in the Bible is actually made up of two words: eben, which means «stone,» and ezer, which means «help.» Therefore, Ebenezer means «the stone of help.»
Do you know who gave that name to a stone? The prophet Samuel did.
When did it happen? After God helped the people of Israel defeat the Philistines.
Where did he place the stone? The place is not well known, but the Bible says that the prophet Samuel placed the stone between Mizpah and Shen. Mizpah is a place that is located north of Jerusalem.
Why did Samuel use a stone? In ancient times, stones were used as monuments to remember important events.
In that same place, years ago, the people of Israel had lost a battle against the Philistines. They had even lost the ark of the covenant for not trusting God. But this time, they had won! The prophet Samuel wanted to remind everyone with that stone that God always comes to our aid, if we trust Him.
Sometimes, we need to see those «monuments» or «reminders» so as not to forget that God takes care of us and protects us every day of our lives.
Do you have any objects that remind you how God has helped you on a certain occasion?
