Dog’s bark, cat’s meow, lions roar, bears growl, and dolphins emit a special sound to communicate . . . Oh! and parrots can repeat sounds. However, although animals communicate with each other, they cannot talk like us. Do you know why? It’s because their brains are not as developed, and their vocal cords are not prepared for it.
However, the Bible tells the story of an animal that did speak. Do you remember what it was? You can read it in the book of Numbers, chapter 22. God made a donkey speak to teach a lesson to the prophet Balaam, who was its master.
Balaam was riding on his donkey on his way to Moab, when suddenly the donkey got scared and ran off the road. Balaam was very angry and hit his donkey, because it almost made him fall. Twice more, the donkey acted weird and Balaam hit it.
Then the donkey spoke up and said, «Why are you beating me?» Finally, Balaam realized that in the middle of the road there was an angel with a sword, who gave him an important message from God.
So not only did that donkey speak, but it also saw something Balaam did not see. Many times, God uses animals to teach humans a lesson. Animals may not speak like you and I do, but they are intelligent and can communicate and transmit messages that show the love of our Creator.
Remember to respect animals!
