Have you ever met with your schoolmates to discuss a topic? Then you can say that you have been part of a council.
A council is a meeting or assembly to discuss something.
In the Bible, there are many types of councils. People met in an assembly to consult or review some matters about laws or to ask for advice.
In the time of Jesus, there was the Council of Jerusalem. In the Greek language the council was called «Sanhedrin,» but it was also known as the «Great Sanhedrin.» It was made up of the nation’s elders, the chief priests, and the scribes. The president of that assembly or council was the chief priest.
Normally, they met to decide things related to their religion. They could question people to decide whether they were guilty or innocent; however, they needed the authorization of the Roman government to decide on serious crimes or death sentences.
Jesus was taken several times before the Sanhedrin. They tried to accuse Him because they said He was stirring up the people with His teachings.
Can you imagine that? How wrong they were! Jesus was innocent, but they did all they could to condemn Him. To do this, they looked for false witnesses to misinterpret everything Jesus had taught.
Have you ever been treated unfairly, like the council did with Jesus? Write it in your Prayer Journal and ask Jesus to help you be like Him, so you can face injustices.
