«But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come» (2 Timothy 3: l).
SECOND TIMOTHY 3 is a warning about future apostasy that would take place because of the sin that is present in our nature: people love themselves and money; they are proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful; do not love; are cruel, without self-control, inhumane, traitors, friends of pleasure rather than friends of God, and will have a form of godliness, but will deny its power (w. 2-5).
While Jesus the Sower planted good seed in His field, that is, in the church, the enemy came at night and sowed tares (see Matt 13:24—30). The weapons he uses are seduction, deception, and then, accusation. The enemy’s mission is to confront and divide friends. He accuses us before God and speaks evil about us. He accuses God and speaks evil of Him to us.
In Palestine, when the wheat was already sown and someone came and sowed tares over the wheat, it was considered an act of vengeance in order to ruin his sown field and the harvest (Matt. 13:27, 28).
The tares reached about twenty-five inches in height and only when they matured could their dark-colored grains be easily distinguished from the wheat. The seeds were poisonous and caused vertigo and seizures and, in some cases, death.
We must not fear the enemybecause we have a sower Friend who has already defeated him and in Him, we can overcome. He is not only the owner of the field, but also our Defender, Comforter, and Restorer.
«In these dreadful hours we must learn to trust, to depend solely upon the merits of the atonement, and in all our helpless unworthiness cast ourselves upon the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour. We shall never perish while we do this— never!»(Testimony Treasures, vol. l, p. 107).
Paul insisted that Timothy stand firm, bound to the Word of the Lord and the Lord of the Word because the Holy Scriptures impact people’s lives. The Word gave Timothy direction and strength to accept God’s salvation and to lead the church.
For all this, as Billy Graham rightly said,
«Study the Bible to be wise, believe to be saved, and live to be holy. Remember that we are the Bible that many read and the sermons many hear.»
