«Who being the brightness of His glory and the image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high» (Hebrews 1:3).
PAUL SAID that the revelation of God to us is made through the Son because:
He is the brightness: That is, the reflection that reveals the Father. When we look at the sun, we do not see the sun, but rather its rays. The Son is what is visible of God’s glory and character.
He is the image: That is, the exact representation. Christ is the «imprint» of God. He is reality itself. They are one in essence, character, thought, purpose, and mission.
He is the Sustainer: Everything was done by the power of His Word. He spoke and it existed. In addition to creating the universe, He sustains and preserves it. The universe is not a clock that God wound up and set in motion. It requires permanent attention through laws and processes that He Himself established.
He redeems us: The same power of creation is needed to recreate or redeem. By purifying sinners, Christ seeks to restore them forever.
He rules us: By virtue of His death and resurrection, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on the throne of God with full power and authority.
Helen Lemmel was born in England in 1863 to a missionary family. She studied music in Germany and married a wealthy man, but he abandoned her when she became blind.
At the age of fifty-five, she heard a phrase that impressed her: «Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face.»
Helen had lost her vision, but she could see Christ through the eyes of faith; thus, she wrote:
O soul are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior and life more abundant and free.
She then put the words in the chorus that are so well known to everyone:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
