«Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed» (Isaiah 53:4, 5).
One hot summer day a little boy went to go swimming in a lagoon behind his house in southern Florida.
He was enjoying the water while his mother watched him from the window. Suddenly she ran out of the house to her son while in desperation she shouted at him to get out of the water. The boy was frightened and began to swim toward his mom, even though he didn’t know what was happening. But it was too late. The mom reached the dock and grabbed her son by the arms just as a crocodile grabbed him by the legs.
Mom pulled with all her strength, and although the crocodile was very strong, she absolutely would not let go of the boy.
Hearing the screams, a neighbor hurried over with his rifle and shot the crocodile dead.
The little boy survived but his legs were terribly disfigured. After several surgeries and a long time in therapy, he was finally able to walk again.
Later on a journalist interviewed the boy and asked him if he would show the scars that he still had on his legs. The boy raised his pants leg and showed them to the journalist. Then, proudly, he rolled up his sleeves and said, «But the scars you really should see are these.” They were the marks left by his mom’s fingernails and she held him against the pull of the crocodile with such power and perseverance. “I have these scars because my mom never let go of me; she saved my life!»
If there is ever a time that you are in pain without really understanding why, remember this story. It may be because God is holding onto you tightly so that you don’t fall and the enemy can destroy you.
Jesus gave everything for us; He suffered unspeakable pain in order to give us peace and healing. Let’s take our pain to Him, and one day He will show us the scars of His love.
