“With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering,
Bearing with one another in love”
GOD CREATED people to relate to one another. By relating with others we find love and belonging , and come to notice many of our own character defects.
Humans yearn to belong; no matter what our age or gender may be, we always seek to satisfy our desire to belong. We all need to feel loved. That’s why sincere, affectionate greetings, well-intentioned hugs, simple and authentic smiles and true words of approval are vital; they are our way of making others feel that they “belong here;” “are appreciated;” ‘are one of us, brethren in Christ Jesus.» When God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; 1 will make him a helper comparable to him™ (Genesis 2:18), He was precisely referring to what we have been talking about.
Someone once said, and rightfully so, “1 know I exist because you see me.” We become aware of our existence through our relationship with others. We are built up by the relationship we hive with other people, and we do the same for them. Through contact with his mother in the first place, a baby begins to get to know himself and build himself up. Without her, it would be very difficult for him to survive. Of course, the father is also a determined in that sense. Later on, the baby encounters other people and interrelates with them to feel he exists and know who he is, what he can do, what he knows, what he needs and what he can offer others.
Human beings develop in society, within the small family nucleus, at church, in their neighborhood, etc. Together, we build bridges of communication that allow us to share ideas and affection, even if it’s sometimes hard to do. And we’re all enriched by this. God 1s the One who joins us when relationships are broken offand we have become emotionally isolated.
Dear friend, let’s set up bridges of communication; let’s build them with humility, patience, tolerance and sympathy. We need to stop focusing on ourselves and our wishes; we need to humbly seek God. If we build a bridge of love to Him, we’ll also be able to build bridges to those around us.
Children need care; teenagers, understanding; young people, guidance; adults, friendship; seniors, company. Let’s be bridges that will lead many people to the kingdom of heaven.
