«Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord» (l Thessalonians 4:17).
A FEW YEARS AGO, the media published some statements by physicist Stephen Hawking that revealed his vision for the future of the world. Of course, his concepts are not biblical: he was one of the greatest defenders of the «Big Bang» theory for the origin of the universe. However, he stated, «I see great dangers to the human race. The solution is to abandon the planet. If humans don’t leave earth in the next one hundred years, they will be an extinct species.»
However, this is not an easy solution. According to him, the biggest problem will be distances. The closest star to earth, after the sun, is more than four light-years away. Today’s spaceships would take fifty thousand years to get there.
His words are provocative and challenging, but they show that even someone who does not accept the Bible understands and announces that there will soon be no life on earth.
What should be our attitude, being that we know the clear and profound revelation? Shouldn’t we seek all the means necessary of announcing what will happen to the earth and its inhabitants and which has already been prophesied by the Bible? Will the stones speak first so that we can have courage later?
We have one more reason to announce in a loud voice: we know the real solution. While Hawking, considered one of the most important physicists on the planet, only manages to find the problem, we have the solution. That makes us more responsible for announcing this message.
We don’t need to flee the planet, or spaceships to reach space or the stars where we can live. We don’t need to fear an alien invasion or complex solutions to the threats of the future. We need to know and believe in the guidance of God’s Word. We need to b trust that the «Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance» (2 Peter 3:9).
We need to put our hope in the Lord’s return. Then we will live in heaven for a thousand years. In this way we will leave the planet. Not by human hands, but guided by the Lord, as He brings about a re-creation of the earth.
«We are living in the last days. The end of all things is at hand. The signs foretold by Christ are fast fulfilling» (Counsels on Health, p. 392).
Let us do our part. It is time to get out of this world and live in a new earth, the promised heavenly Canaan, whose capital, Jerusalem, will descend from heaven.
