“Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them (Luke 18: 15).
AT THE STREET CORNERS of inland Mexico, one can often see native mothers carrying their little ones on their backs. I am always amazed by the fact that babies can spend such long periods of time on their mothers’ backs, while rarely seeing them face-to-face; but through body contact, they can feel their mothers’ warmth, feeding their bodies and their emotions. Those mothers don’t usually go to pediatricians, even though their little ones are exposed to the elements and environmental pollution. They seem to be healthy and you very seldom hear them cry. Could it be that physical contact with their mothers not only provides them warmth, but also health?
Experts believe that such frequent intimate contact with their mothers strengthens more the body’s defense system, so that’s why those children suffer less frequently from typical childhood diseases. I truly believe that positive physical contact generates both physical and emotional health.
Some research studies on this topic have confirmed that positive physical touch, expressed through caressing, is a basic human need. It has also been observed that in the animal kingdom, mothers also caress their young, so this shows that not only humans have the ability to love. Since positive caress are defined as basic needs, human beings never stop needing them. Babies, children, young people, adults, the elderly, men and women, everyone needs to get appropriate touch to live healthily.
Caresses affect the personality in short, medium and long term. Those who are caressed are loved, accepted and cared for. Caresses as well affect social adaptation needed to relate to others adequately.
In the Bible we read a wonderful story about mothers who brought their little ones to Jesus, so He could touch them. He also yearns to touch you now to fill the emptiness in your soul, because you are His beloved daughter.
God is the best provider of caresses and affection. His touch can grant you new life and health, as it happened with the woman who touched His garment. Even if human contact is scarce in your life, fall into an intense embrace with Jesus, and all your emotional needs will be satisfied.
