“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock» (Matthew 7:24).
“Christ’s purpose in parable teaching was in direct line with the purpose of the Sabbath. God gave to men the memorial of His creative power, that they might discern Him in the works of His hand…. Jesus bound up His precious lessons with the beauty of natural things. On the holy rest day, above all other days, we should study the messages that God has written for us in nature…. And Christ has linked His teaching, not only with the day of rest, but with the week of toil.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, ch. 1, pp. 25, 26).
The parable of the two foundations exemplifies this very well. I do not know if you have had the opportunity of spending time by the sea, making castles in the sand, and seeing how any wave takes them away regardless of the effort put into it.
In the crowd that listened to Jesus, there were many people who were engaged in construction and must have understood perfectly what He was talking about.
Building a house on the sand not only foreshadows a bad future and doom, but is also something that in everyday life leads to many problems, constant inspections, and costly and avoidable repairs.
In His teachings, Jesus not only showed the long-term results, but also sought to facilitate and deal with daily life. In a city in Argentinian Patagonia, I saw a house built on a towering rock. That area, hit hard by ocean and desert winds, by ruthless tides and natural phenomena, requires additional foresight at the time of construction. This house rose above all the others and, from below, it could be seen how sturdy it was.
It is likely that at this stage of your life you are forming your home or thinking about doing so. In addition to worrying about your safety and physical comfort, make sure that the most important elements of the home, the people who will form it, have a solid foundation in God. There is no comfortable or well-established house that can resist the attacks of an enemy who sneaks in through a person who did not base his or her life on God.
What qualities are you looking for in your partner? What is your personal relationship with God like? Are you making your plans based on the Rock?
