«If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.
For as the churning of milk produces butter, and as wringing the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife»
(Proverbs 30:32, 33).
I REMEMBER watching my mother manually churning the milk to make butter. I sat next to her, without missing any detail, to see the exact moment when that white liquid would become a creamy product. I thought this was unusual and amazing! How did it happen? I didn’t know; the only thing that was clear to me was that you couldn’t expect another outcome. The lesson the proverb intends to teach us is emphatic and clear: in the face of every action there will always be a reaction. Churning milk over and over will produce butter. This is so; it will always be so.
Similarly, a repeated action will generate a response, and the time will come when it will settle into our daily life. Those who act foolishly, repeating bad deeds over and over, but hoping to get good results, will only live in a daydream that sooner or later will fade out in front of their eyes. Milk will turn into butter and there will be nothing they can do to avoid it.
We already know that the repetition of an act generates a habit, and that all habits structure our character and personality; hence the importance of some things we do as a routine, mistakenly believing that they are harmless and have no consequences. If harmful acts, may seem simple to us are repeated over time, they can chain us and make us slaves. Sometimes, out Of curiosity, we explore twisted and dire matters that will totally wipe out our moral health.
For example, dabbling in pornography, sexual distortions, and so many other related matters, assuming that we have enough judgment and will come out undefeated, is a powerful strategy of Satan to ensnare us and make us fall into addictions and vices that sometimes can be tortuous and impossible to overcome.
Don’t waste your strength or your intelligence on worthless things. May your prayer be: «Lord, in Your name 1 come victorious. With Your help 1 will stop taking risks that may eventually lead me to the loss of my integrity my dignity, and my holiness. Please help me discover the things I must abandon. Amen.’
