“But his mother told the servants ‘Do whatever he tells you’” (John 2:5).
She watched Him learn to walk and talk She sat Him on her lap to teach Him about nature, the Scriptures, and His loving character. She saw Him stand for what was right from a very young age, showing He was deeply and acutely aware of His mission. She went to call Him for meals when He spent hours in the carpenter’s workshop, she prepared His clothes and organized feasts every year.
But she hadn’t been there for His baptism. They hadn’t seen each other in quite a while. She found out about Him the way other people in Nazareth did: from news that came from nearby places.
She believed in Him. Well, almost always. Sometimes she had her doubts and wished He would reveal Himself for once and for all.
Joseph had died, Jesus had left and thoughts about the future worried and saddened her. We don ‘t know if it had been planned that way or not, but the wedding feast reunited them again.
How do you feel when you meet loved ones after a long time? Weddings are occasions that tend to reunite people that way. And actually there’s not always enough time to talk and get up to date, but merely just reuniting seems to provide new energy.
There He was, tenderly serving as usual. But He looked different. She could tell something had happened. The thing is, you don ‘t return from battle the same way you left and Jesus had been faced with fasting in the desert and Satan’s attacks. He had been victorious and that could be perceived in his bearing.
Just as silent marks of victory could be seen in Jesus, a tense silence began to be felt in the hall which also showed something was going on. Faced with the need for more drinks for the wedding, Mary saw the perfect opportunity for Jesus, her son, her pride, to show His divine power.
How many times do we want to speed God’s clock up and do things our way, even trying to find unselfish motives to do so? Jesus stopped her short, although respectfully, like He did in the temple when he was young.
Yes, there was no doubt He was her son. He still had intact divine interests and that was assurance enough for her right then. That’s how she left everything in His hands.
What are you trying to hasten God with today? Enjoy your encounter with Him and place everything in His hands. It will no doubt be for the best.
