«See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me» (Isaiah 49:16).
SOME WALLS have become historical documents of humanity. It’s impossible not to remember the Berlin Wall, which divided that German city in two; not only that, but it also kept families and friends apart over a long and sad period of almost thirty years. However, the love and hope of meeting again held them together and made the tearing down of the wall possible. There were 120 kilometers of cement, 3.6 meters high, where hundreds of people lost their lives in search of freedom.
Another wall that stands unscathed by the passage of time is the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. That place, sacred to Jews, has become a traditional place of prayer. Millions of people have prayed there, perhaps hoping God will answer from the other side of the wall.
That makes me think that God tore down the walls that separated us from Him by sending His Son to this world to be born, die and rise again, only for the unconditional love that binds us to His mercy and grace. Having been separated from God by transgression, through His sacrifice, humanity can hope to meet again in our heavenly home to never part again. But what about those walls of indifference, apathy and coldness we sometimes build around us, which separate us from those we love? Those are the ones the experts call «emotional walls.» They are shield’s that shackle and harden hearts, and disconnect us from ourselves and others.
Your personal story may be marked by episodes of abuse, mistreatment and abandonment. Therefore, you have decided to build up a cold wall to protect yourself from future aggressions. You must know that God is by your side, giving you support, strength and wisdom to face your fears and overcome the fragility in which you have locked yourself up.
Dear friend, now is the time to tear down walls. Open up your heart and mind; learn to give and receive affection; let your senses lead you to experience Gods love and the love of others. That’s how by faith, your eyes will be able to see the borders of the holy city, which will be your home forever
