A disciple is student who is learning from teacher.
Jesus had many disciples, because He was Teacher who was followed by many people.
However, of all those disciples, Jesus chose twelve to always be by His side.
Why did He choose twelve and not more or less? If you remember, the people of Israel came from the twelve sons of Jacob, who became the twelve tribes. However, the descendants of these tribes had already forgotten God. That is why Jesus chose twelve collaborators to start the Christian church.
These twelve disciples accompanied Jesus every day for three and half years, for they had to learn many things to fulfill very special mission: to preach that Jesus is our Savior.
Jesus entrusted them with the mission of preaching the gospelof salvation to the whole world. They were “the ones who were sent,” or “envoys,” which in Greek is apdstolos.
The twelve disciples are also called apostles, then, because they were in charge of speaking about Jesus to the whole world. Remember that Christian is not only student (disciple), who learns from Jesus every day, but also an envoy (apostle) to announce the message of salvation to the whole world.
What are you, disciple of Jesus or an apostle? Why?
