«So I advise you to buy gold from me gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see» (Revelation 3:18).
A FEW DAYS AGO I went to my regular appointment with the ophthalmologist, and he gave me a recommendation, He told me that every two years at most, my lenses needed to be checked to ensure that they were still suitable. I felt happy with my glasses, however. I thought they provided me clear and precise vision and that such a revision was unnecessary. However, while still at the doctor’s office and after undergoing the relevant tests, I realized that I really did need a change of lenses. We don’t see what we can’t see.
Suddenly, I seemed to be seeing everything in a new light and with greater brightness. Now I could see the fine details of objects which had gone unnoticed before, without my realizing it. When I looked in the mirror, I discovered a few wrinkles that I had not seen before and I found myself exclaiming in surprise. Undoubtedly, the change was necessary, and this was my conclusion: «Things are not as I used to see them.»
Let us apply this experience to the spiritual realm. Sometimes we spend our lives with a blurred view of reality. We judge things based on what we «see,» and form our opinions accordingly. We even love through the filter of our own lenses, without asking ourselves if what we see is indeed reality. Our vision must be renewed, and now I understand it clearly. To do this we must consult God, our heavenly Ophthalmologist. In His wisdom, He will perfect our vision, and we will see with the eyes of spiritual discernment what we could not see for ourselves, with our limited human vision. Our gaze will then be more empathetic. We will see others as God sees them. And we will discover «emotional and spiritual wrinkles» in ourselves that will bring back our humility. That humility which is the key to a Christian life.
If your vision is blurred by a past of shame, trauma, disappointment or failure, which does not let you live happily in the present or to look optimistically at the future, don’t dole out blame or hide behind excuses. Go to the «Divine Doctors» office, humbly ask for His forgiveness, and take responsibility for your life. Once corrected by the power of God, your vision will make you sensitive, merciful, and balanced; allowing you to work on yourself while leaving arrogance behind.
