«The name of the Lord is a stronghold to which the righteous look for help»
(Proverbs 18:10).
King Asa had remained faithful to God and had exhorted the people of Judah to be so. Despite having had terrible examples of apostasy in his grandfather and father, this young man decided to give his life to the Lord. But one day, he learned that an army of a million Cushites was coming to confront him. A million soldiers! What could I do? It was a militia that far surpassed it. All the gazes of his courtiers were fixed on him, waiting for directions. An alliance with the Egyptians? Send messengers to the mighty Assyrian army? What to do?
Asa made the decision to kneel down and place his problem in the hands of the mighty God. He knew that humanly he had no way to defeat his enemies, so he pleaded for heaven’s help, acknowledging divine sovereignty in this world (2 Chronicles 14:11). The Bible says that when Asa finished praying. God himself took it upon himself to defeat the Cushites.
More than once I have had difficulties that have put me in a dead end. Sometimes I have wondered why God allows us to face these kinds of situations. Wouldn’t it be better to live without them? The truth is that challenges force us to pray and recognize that God is the only one who can help us. And that is extremely healthy. It is then that we identify our great limitations and their infinite power.
Acknowledging the power of God is especially important for those who relish the honeys of success. Asa, for example, was the king of Israel, a man accustomed to the recognition and excessive attention of his courtiers. Such a lifestyle makes it easy for someone to forget God and become arrogant. Something similar happens in other areas, whether it be student life, professional life or work, when you are doing very well, one tends to believe that you do not need as much from the heavenly Father. Therefore, waking up with a million soldiers in front of your door ready to annihilate you is not necessarily so bad.
Do you have a big problem in front of you?
You do not know what to do?
I invite you to follow Asa’s example. Bend your knees and acknowledge his lordship in this world.
Tell him that he is the only one who can help you.
