«You, Lord, are with me as an invincible warrior; Those who persecute me will fall, and will not be able to defeat me ”(Jer. 20:11).
It was March 12, 2015 and the night seemed total serenity. I was getting ready to go out for a while to do some exercise in the street, as was my custom. As I progressed, something strange was happening: my eyes were filling with small particles that caused me a lot of discomfort and prevented my good vision.
Suddenly, I heard a voice:
– What are you doing, neighbor? -I wonder.
«I went out for a walk,» I said.
– In the middle of an ash shower? She showed her amazement.
I continued on my way, because for a moment I did not know how to fit what they had just told me. I didn’t take it seriously. But obviously, my neighbor was more informed than I was: she knew that the Turrialba volcano, located more than 70 kilometers away from our neighborhood, was active that day. I believed that this giant of nature was tremendously far from me, therefore, I never imagined that he could cause me any harm. I thought wrong, I imagined wrong; that giant forced me to rush back into my house, because the atmosphere was impossible.
Upon entering the house, I turned on the television to watch the news. The entire population was scared. Many remembered with sadness the year 1963, when the same phenomenon of nature had destroyed livestock, crops, properties and the health of many Costa Ricans. I, however, knew that by our side we have an invincible warrior, incomparable in strength to any giant of nature. And I clung to him.
Why fear giants when we have within our grasp, through faith, the power of almighty God? Let us say, like Jeremiah: «You, Lord, are with me as an invincible warrior; Those who persecute me will fall, and will not be able to defeat me; they will fail, they will be put to shame, forever covered with unforgettable disgrace ”(Jer. 20:11). «Because a child has been born to us, God has given us a son, who has been given the power to rule. And they will give him these names: Wonderful in his plans, invincible God, Eternal Father, Prince of peace ”(Isa. 9: 6).
“Jehovah is the mighty one who instills fear and respect. The prophet was sure that although his enemies were strong, God, the mighty one who makes them tremble, could easily defeat them «(Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 4, pp. 464-465).
