As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable» (Proverbs 25:3).
That morning a woman fell at the feet of Jesus. Then the Lord smiled at her and asked her, «What is it you want?»
«Command that in Your kingdom my two sons will sit next to You, one to Your right and the other to Your left,» said the woman with great certainty.
That kind mother wished to assure her sons a place in the positions of influence of the kingdom of heaven. Only Jesus would be above them! Then the Lord said to the woman: «You do not know what you’re asking,» and then He looked at the expectant candidates for the heavenly government. «And you, could you drink from the same glass that I have to drink?»
«Of course!» the young disciples answered preposterously.
Jesus looked at them closely and said: «You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave» (Matthew 20:25-27). Jesus knew that unless an attitude of service is assumed by the one who exercises it, power will corrupt the human heart. Hence the history of humanity is full of examples of all kinds of misdeeds and abuses on the part of those who live by exercising their power.
Max Weber (1864-1920), the eminent German sociologist, gave an interesting admonition: «Primitive Christians also knew very explicitly that the world is ruled by demons and that anyone who becomes involved in politics, that is to say, anyone who agrees to use power and violence as means, has sealed a pact with the devil, so that it is no longer true that in his activity the good produces only good, and the bad, but that the contrary often happens. Anyone who does not see this is a child, politically speaking’—Max Weber, «Politics as a Vocation,» 1919.
The path you are going to travel throughout your life will be full of corruption and evil. Unless you decide to be a servant leader, you will corrupt your heart in any of the realms of power that you will exercise. That is one of the great decisions of your life. Don’t fail.
Ask the Lord today to help you exercise a leadership of selfless service.
