PREACHING IN THE DESERT
«The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight’ » (Matthew 3:3).
IN 1995, we arrived at Los Guido, in Desamparados, with a special mission. My brother was the new district pastor and wanted to carry out a successful evangelism campaign in Desamparados, a small district in the province of San José, in Costa Rica. So every Sabbath afternoon, a group of church members headed for those areas covered with little houses strategically built in every bit of space possible, with a few trees here and there. Our feet walked over yellowish soil while the dogs barked and the neighbors quietly peeked out their windows to see who the mysterious visitors were that carried Bibles and The Faith of Jesus booklets in their hands.
Eventually, my brother had the privilege of seeing the results of the effort and work carried out in that area under the direction of the Holy Spirit, and was able to see a great church established in Los Guido. What a privilege! Many people decided to be baptized and were rescued from the spiritual desert in which they lived. You too, dear reader, can be part of the beautiful process of helping someone out of their desert thanks to your testimony and your selfless love. That is certainly what people need most today. There is too much solitude, too much suffering; there are too many people living in a particular kind of desert who are waiting for a drop of hope.
You may have noticed that you live in the middle of a desert as well. Very close to you are many people who live without love, without friendship, without a word of understanding, without someone who can bring them hope . . . Those people need someone to speak to them about God—someone who is not afraid of their individual deserts and who does not judge them, but approaches them with a message of salvation. That is being an oasis in the life of those who are thirsty. Wouldn’t you like to be that kind of person?
In the book Evangelism, it is announced that «the time is coming when there will be as many converted in a day as there were on the day of Pentecost, after the disciples had received the Holy Spirit» (White, p. 692). I do not know if those times have already arrived, but I do know that this is a time like no Other to go out to reach souls for Christ. You are not alone; God is with you.
