«A king who on the throne of judgment scatters all evil with his eyes» (Proverbs 20:8).
Isabella was born on April 22, 1451, in Madrigal de Altas Torres, in the kingdom of Casále. Her father was King John Il of Castile and her mother, Isabella of Portugal, second wife of the monarch. She spent her childhood away from the urban nuclei, in Arévalo, along with her brother, Alphonso. The death of her father raised to the throne her half-brother, Henry IV. In those years, Castile was a place of endless internal struggles for power. There was a lack of leadership to give it direction. In 1469, she married Prince Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Aragon. Both formed one of the most powerful couples of the time. After different struggles for the succession of the throne, Isabella was crowned queen of Castile in 1474.
Soon, the young and seemingly helpless queen let her strong leadership be seen and she dedicated herself to consolidating her power by subduing the nobles and uniting the kingdom in the midst of bloody wars. In 1492, Ferdinand achieved one of the great victories for Castile: the conquest of Granada, which would end the Muslim domination in the Iberian Peninsula. Once the situation in Granada was dominated, they proceeded to support Christopher Columbus in his attempt to discover a new route to the east On October 12 of the same year, Columbus discovered a new continent. The discovery of America led Isabella and Ferdinand to be among the most powerful monarchs in Europe. Her moment of glory could not be any better. Thanks to her great feats, in 1496 pope Alexander VI granted them the title of Catholic Monarchs. In a few years, Isabella and Ferdinand had managed to unite their people with brilliant leadership, dominate their enemies, and extend their domains, which laid the foundation for what would be the Spanish Empire years later. But so much fatigue would make a dent in the health of the queen, who died in Medina del Campo on November 26, 1504.
Every era demands leaders at the height of the circumstances. Those who transcend history are not ones who shy away from facing the challenges that life gives them, but those who confront them with courage and are able to overcome them. They are the ones who put forth the foundation for the future development of great nations and individuals.
Today ask the Lord to help you reinforce a good character to the honor and glory of His name.
