A KING OF REGRET
«Luxury is not fitting for a fool, much less for a servant to rule over princes» (Proverbs 19:10).
Nabonidus was the last king of Babylon in coregency with Belshazzar, his son The monarch came from a modest family that had nothing to do with royalty. But his father entered the service of the court and later introduced his son to King Nebuchadnezzar Il, who came to acquire a prominent position in the royal palace. But the crisis unleashed by the death of Nebuchadnezzar in 562 BC changed every. thing. Babylon entered a period of convulsions in which there were three kings in six years and two of them were killed. In the year 556 BC, Nabonidus was acclaimed as a new sovereign without him seeking it. However, in the fourth year of his reign, he left Babylon and left Belshazzar, his son, in charge of the kingdom, while he established himself in the oasis of Tayma, in the Arabian desert.
There he ordered a wall to be built around the city and he built a palace, where he spent ten years, despite the imminent threat of Cyrus, the Persian king, over his kingdom. Then he decided to return to Babylon to take over the kingdom. However, he made decisions that made him an enemy with the priestly class, since he promoted the worship of Sin, the moon god, and asked to dedicate the temple of Marduk to Sin. Later, there was a conspiracy against Nabonidus and he was taken prisoner. On the night of October 12, 539 BC, Babylon fell into the hands of the Medo-Persians.
Solomon said: «1 have seen servants on horses, while princes walk on the ground like servants» (Ecclesiastes 10:7), True, there are leaders with a marked moral poverty that causes serious problems where they are. Instead, those who trust in the Lord can make the following promise theirs: » ‘Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand’ » (Isaiah 41:10).
