Pathfinders,» Pastor Smith called. All eyes turned to the camp leader as evening shadows played tag with the warm glow radiating from the campfire.
«I’ve been told by the sergeant at the nearby army base that tonight’s war game has been canceled.» An audible groan rose from the group. What junior wouldn’t enjoy camping next to an active war zone, even if the guns and bombs were only simulated? «However, we do have a concern. Two soldiers are missing and may be injured.» The man cleared his throat. «I think we should take a moment and pray that God will send His angels to be with the missing men and help guide the searchers.»
The Pathfinders reverently stood, removed their caps, bowed their heads, and prayed aloud for the missing men.
Early the next morning the sergeant arrived with the good news that they had found the soldiers unharmed. Then he asked to speak to the group. «What I really wanted to tell you is that last night I was listening to what you said around the campfire. You didn’t see me. I was standing behind a tree. But I heard you pray for my missing men. I told the soldiers about it, and they want to come and thank you personally.
«At our base we’re training to fight and someday may have to give our lives for our country. After hearing your beautiful prayers, we have a reason to go anywhere in the world because we’ll be defending boys and girls like you. Thank you.»
We never know when someone may be listening to our words. What a wonderful opportunity we have to encourage and motivate.
