«Because of the transgression of a land, many are Its princes; but by a man of understanding and knowledge right will be prolonged» (Proverbs 28:2)
EDUCATION
Eli was the high priest Of the people of Israel at the time of the judges. But his leadership was highly questionable because his sons, both priests, had set up a network of corruption around the sanctuary, in the eyes of little Samuel, who watched with horror at the disrespect of these men toward sacred things. But one day, they both died in a battle against the Philistines where the Ark of the Covenant was captured; Eli also died upon receiving the terrible news.
For several years, the country remained in the midst of a terrible political abandonment and at the mercy of certain warlords who occasionally rose against it.
What could be done to give the nation stability?
Years later, the prophet Samuel took one of the most relevant steps in Israel’s history: he founded the school of prophets to form a new class of religious leaders. He was not willing to continue to cover up the corruption of certain priests and decided to bring a change to the kind of young people who would influence God’s people. He sought one of the most effective ways to transform a society: through education. He also tried to get closer to the disoriented and neglected people of God by making trips throughout Israel. The prophet loved the children of God, despite the stubbornness and tendency of these toward idolatry, disobedience, and belligerency. He desired to give them the best of himself and turn his existence into a channel through which divine affection would reach the Hebrew people. In fact, it was Samuel who paved the way for this nation toward the most prosperous time of its history with the reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon (though he didn’t live to know the latter).
An educated society is fairer and more prosperous, as its schools provide the necessary leaders to guide the country in the best way. In addition, it creates opportunities for opinion and the awareness of the rights and obligations of each citizen, so as not to depend on the whims of a leader who seeks to perpetuate himself through power. Hence, the importance of investing in education, as it is the backbone of the stability of a nation.
If you have the opportunity to study, thank God. Commit to giving your best efforts in school and making the most of your time. Wherever you live, your country expects a lot from you. Being a good student will do a lot for those around you.
