«Therefore the Lord Cod sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken» (Genesis 3:23).
Whatever the cause of anxiety is, it is always experienced characterized by palpitations, shortness of breath, tremors, sweat, comfort, nauseas, vomiting, muscle rigidity, tiredness, tingling, dizziness, unrest, nervousness and irritability, among other symptoms. As nervous tension basically manifest itself in somatic channels, it is logical to provide it with alternative physical and less harmful ducts for its drainage. In other words, it is possible to reduce nervous tension if we offer healthier pathways to channel it.
One of the most efficient ways of reducing tension is by doing exercises. Doing any sport or any other activity that require physical effort can be positive in this case. However, there are certain activities that can be more beneficial than others.
In a study published in the Korean Journal of Horticultural Science & Technology, researchers examined the effects of a horticultural therapy program on pain, anxiety and depression on 67 hospitalized patients. Half of the patients were assigned to a group who performed activities like planting vegetables, cultivating medicinal herbs or flowers inside the hospital or outdoors. The other half received routine care inside the hospital. The study showed that those who participated in «horticultural therapy» significantly reduced their levels of pain, anxiety and depression when to the second group. The researchers recommend using this type of exercise to improve patients’ recovery.
Outdoor exercise through gardening has many benefits. «Exercise in the open air should be prescribed as a life-giving necessity. And for such exercises there is nothing better than the cultivation of the soil. Let patients have flower beds to care for, or work to do in the orchard or vegetable garden. As they are encouraged to leave their rooms and spend time in the open air, cultivating flowers or doing some other light, pleasant work, their attention will be diverted from themselves and their sufferings.»( The Ministry of Healing, ch. 19, p. 265).
When the nervous system is overloaded, working outdoors, in direct contact with the land, can help to release nervous tension. This activity represents a real «ground wire.» The labor of working the land assigned by God, far from being a punishment for the sinful fallen man, entails a true blessing. Try this method yourself.
