Mr. Davy sighed heavily and watched the waves wash over the sand. «Why didn’t God answer our prayer?» he asked himself again and again. «We needed a good crop. Although we prayed, our harvest failed.» He thought of his children kneeling by their beds asking God to save their potato fields, but the weather had proved too much for the growing plants.
«Daddy,» his children had said, «we prayed for a good crop, and you said God would answer. Has He forgotten us?» Farmers around Grahamstown, South Africa, were facing harsh financial times because of crop failures. What could he say to his children?
Something caught his eye as it tumbled in the breakers. A glass bottle sealed with a cork bobbed in the backwash of the waves. Mr. Davy wasn’t interested. He’d seen these «if you find this, write me a letter» messages before. But this bottle rode the next wave and landed right at his toes. Absentmindedly he picked it up, removed the cork, and read the message. Then he smiled broadly.
«Children!» he called as he rushed into their simple house. «Listen to this message I found by the ocean. ‘If the person who finds this paper is in need, write to this address and I’ll send help.’ «
Mr. Davy wrote immediately. Soon a letter appeared in their mailbox with a small amount of cash, just enough to buy groceries for the week. It happened week after week until the next potato harvest put the family back on their feet.
It’s amazing what God and a creative, kind hearted friend can do to lift the worries of this world.
