«Foolishness is bound up in the heart of child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him» (Proverbs 22:15).
On October 21, 1556, Charles V stayed overnight in Cabez6n (Spain) on his way to the Monastery of Yuste, where he died years later. Affected by some illnesses, the emperor now in retreat wanted peace and tranquility. He conversed with his grandson, Charles of Austria, son of Philip Il, and related some of his feats on the battlefields. The boy listened attentively, but he was restless, which despaired the old monarch. The impertinent youngster even dared to mock his grandfather claiming that «he would never have escaped,» referring to the way Charles V had escaped from Innsbruck at the threat of Mauritius of Saxony. The boy’s notable disrespect made a bad impression on his grandfather, who observed his grandson more closely. Later, he told his sister Leonor that he was sorry to find the boy to be too boisterous. And with a prophetic tone, he said to her, «His treatment and humor I like very little, and I do not know what he can give of himself over time.»
The old emperor wasn’t wrong. Charles of Austria was unveiled early on for his cruelty: he liked to roast live hares and once he blinded horses in the barn; in addition, at the age of eleven, he whipped a girl for his sadistic amusement, an excess for which he paid compensation to the father of the girl. The prince did not respect his father, the king of Spain, whom he compared with the figure of his grandfather. In addition, he conspired against his own father and was said to have made plans to assassinate him. Philip Il had to send him away to be to locked up in his quarters. The virulent prince died at twenty-three years of age.
A rude child is a real headache for a family. But the situation can become dramatic as the years go by. Where will a stubborn, disobedient, unruly, rude child end up? Their future will be nothing rosy. It is possible that their insolences cause hilarity to their relatives, but later on will reap the sad seed that has been sown. A lack of discipline does not even respect the homes of real families. We don’t all get an optimal education at home. Our parents may not have disciplined us when they should. But God can also straighten out that which is not right. Discipline is part of personal development.
