«Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then l, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband» (Revelation 21:1, 2).
HERE ON EARTH, our home is our greatest refuge. It is the place where we can be with the people we love the most, and thus, we want it to be comfortable and inviting. We women dedicate time, attention, and resources to the decoration, cleaning, and preparation of both the interior and the exterior of our homes. Knowing our nature, God is preparing a wonderful home for us there in the New Jerusalem.
Although the current city of Jerusalem, the one that exists here in this world of sin, is splendid with its ancient, rich, and varied architecture, you can imagine what the one not constructed by human hands and intelligence, but by God, will be like.
The Spirit took John in vision to the great city of Jerusalem and showed him its glory so that all of us who would come later might know about it: the city «shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal» (Revelation 21:11, NLT). In it, not only will there be no more sorrow and pain and we will have forgotten everything suffered during this earthly life, but in addition, the brilliance of our future home will be like precious Stones. What more could we ask for? Luxury and eternal peace, all in the same place, is what God is preparing for His sons and daughters who love and obey Him.
John also saw that there was no temple where we would go to worship because God Himself will be our temple. Neither did he see sun or moon because the glory of God will illuminate everything. Tie doors will never be closed because there will never be night (see Revelation 21:22—25). Neither will fear exist.
It is clear that the biblical reality of the New Jerusalem is much more impressive than what our finite minds can take in. Perhaps what impresses the least is that it will be impressive; what impresses the most is that it is real. There will be peace and happiness, and at the same time, there will be no more death or pain. Making it there gives me hope here on earth. What about you? It seems to me that it is a good reason to live, without ever losing sight of it.
