I WAS LISTENING to survivors of hurricanes David and Isaac, which affected the Dominican Republic not long ago, and I was surprised to hear the account of one family. When the wind began to beat with force, the young wife, along with her husband and their children, «enjoyed the spectacle» through a window, the children enthusiastically cheered each piece of zinc that broke off the roofs of the neighboring houses; some trees also took flight, to the delight of the family. They never thought that the enormous strength of the hurricane would uproot their own home. They felt completely safe in it, but when the rain and the wind began to impact their roof, they heard a terrible crash. The parents, worried, did everything they could to save all their children, who were being shaken by gusts of wind up to 150 miles an hour. Everyone survived, even though they lost what they had and spent several days outdoors in wet clothing, shivering from the cold.
This dangerous world does not provide safety. At any moment, we can be victims of hurricanes, earthquakes, plagues, famines, or war—of any phenomenon that wreaks havoc as it passes through. Where will we find peace? God is the only One who can give us peace to stand firm in the midst of the most difficult trials. «1he Lord will bless His people with peace.» This is a promise that should fill us with encouragement.
An ancient story says that a king wanted to have a painting in his palace that inspired him peace, so he was brought two paintings from which to choose. The first had a calm lake under a brilliant blue sky; no doubt, it inspired peace. However, the second showed some steep mountains from which fell torrents of water, and a sky illuminated by lightning. When he went close to the painting, the king could see that in the background, there was a simple bush growing from a crevice with a nest of birds resting peacefully in it. Then the king exclaimed: «This is the painting I want! This is truly peace!»
Peace in the midst of the storm. That is the blessing the Lord give us. Make that promise yours so that you can feel calm in your nest, blessed and at peace even when there are harsh storms.
«The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace» (Psalm 29:11).
