The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of Thomas, but the way of the upright is a highway» (Proverbs 15:19).
There was once a wealthy man who, before going on a trip, gave three young men a large amount of money. To the first he gave the fabulous amount of five thousand silver coins, the second one received two thousand silver coins, and the third a thousand (Matthew 25:14-30). Immediately, the first two went to work and looked for the best way to invest their money. Their efforts were great because, as time passed, they doubled the amount they had been given! However, the third one reacted in a very different way to the enormous opportunity he had. Soon he was filled with fear and did not know what to do with the money: he thought that if he opened a business, the payment of taxes would choke his earnings, or that if he associated with someone they could rob him, or that if he bought a farm he would have to work more and be watchful of the employees. What a mess he was in! And all because of that money which he had not requested! It would be best to bury it and return it to its owner when he returned.
The day came when the man came back from his journey and settled accounts with the young men. The first two reported that they had doubled the amount they had been given. Satisfied, the man said to each one: «Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.» However, when he heard the third report, disappointment came over his face: «But, young man, why didn’t you take advantage of the great opportunity you had in your hands?» the owner asked.
«Lord, I knew that you are a hard man, that you reap where you do not sow and collect what you have not scattered So I was scared and hid your money in the young. Here’s what belongs to you.»
Well! The man in the story even earned himself an insult for having given that boy a great opportunity.
Laziness is one of the great evils in a young person’s life. The lazy person loses important opportunities throughout their life, in addition to favoring pessimism, a lack of enthusiasm, and a condemnation of poverty. That is why Ecclesiastes 10: 18 says: «Because of laziness the building decays, and through idleness of hands the house leaks.»
Don’t let this terrible habit be a part of your life.
