A: This young woman has asked an important question. How do I know that the God I’m trying to tell you about really exists? How can I be sure He does what He says He does, and will do what He promises to do?
Perhaps someone has asked you the same question, only they’d say, «Why do you go to church on Saturday? God doesn’t care on which day you worship.» Or they might ask, «Why do you believe the Bible? It’s just a bunch of old stories, right?»
Here’s the only answer I can offer. I know God is God because of what He has done and is doing for me. When Jesus lives in my heart, I find greater joy and satisfaction in life. I treat people better. I love my wife more. I look forward to the future.
But when I chase Jesus away by being stubborn or selfish, I quickly become depressed, frustrated, angry, impatient, and grow resentful of life and the things that happen to me.
I know God is God because He changes me from sad to glad again and again. Nothing on earth can do that. No person has that kind of power. Only a loving, forgiving God can make such a difference in me.
«Take delight in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun» (Psalm 37:4—6). God proves Himself to me every day.
