The dog pound brimmed with beautiful, healthy canines. But Alex had chosen the most flea-bitten, skinniest, pathetic-looking mongrel of the bunch.
Mom sighed. Ever since her husband had left, Alex had begged for a dog. The woman knew that her son’s heart was breaking and needed a friend. But this one?
So it was that Mitzi, an abandoned little black dog, moved to the comfortable surroundings of Alex’s room.
Something remarkable happened. The little animal began to fill out. Her eyes began to shine, and her coat grew in thick and healthy. Alex and Mitzi became inseparable.
«You’ve got to be kidding!» friend Jarad laughed when he heard Alex mention that he was going to enter Mitzi in the local pet show. «You’ll be competing against Bruce, my pure-blooded Collie. You’re going to lose!»
That didn’t stop Alex from combing Mitzi’s coat until it shone. Nor did it prevent him from teaching his furry companion to follow him after a simple command. And it certainly didn’t halt him from spending hours playing with his dog, showering her with love and kindness.
At the show’s conclusion, the judge stood and cleared his throat. «As you know,» he said, «we award blue ribbons for the very best dog in the show. There are many lovely animals here. But one has caught our attention. Her eyes sparkle. Her coat shines as if brushed many times, and she never takes her eyes off her master. Such a relationship between boy and dog is a joy to behold. That’s why this year’s ribbon goes to—Alex and Mitzi.» In life, love wins the greatest awards.
