‘Behold, the days are coming’, says the Lord God, ‘that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord’ (Amos 8: 11).
Hunger relief is a commitment that the international community made for the Millennium Development Goals. Its objective is to reduce by half the number of the starving people by 2015. Unfortunately, the target was not reached even though the food resources of the world could have satisfied everyone’s needs as only 25 US cents daily per child would have been enough to feed them and change their lives forever. In today’s Bible verse God predicts another type of hunger in the world “not a famine of bread, nor a thirst or water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.» His Word is the only food capable of satisfying the deepest needs of our soul, inspiring hope and bringing life to those who daily consume it. Each day brings new challenges, struggles and uncertainties. For each situation, the Lord left behind words of encouragement, strength and guidance.
While some have to deal with overabundance, a large number of people fight to survive hunger and shortages. Physiologically, the hunger sensation happens when there is a drop in the blood sugar level and is related to stomach contractions which cause pain and persistent uncomfortable sensations. The prolonged lack of nutrition is a tragedy across the world as it translates to high malnutrition and mortality rate of the global population. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, one in eight people in the world (about 840 million people) have suffered from chronic malnutrition in the last few years. Most of them are children from developing countries where the lack of food is a direct consequence of poverty.
His mission is that we all must have free and plentiful access to this rich resource, and this is why He shouts it from the rooftops, «Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world» (Ps. 19:4). There we find the One who said, «I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst» (John 6:35) because «the words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life» (v.63).
