«For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations» (Psalm 100:5)
INDALECIO HUGGED his prodigal son with tear-filled eyes and a heart overflowing with emotions as thick as the very jungle that surrounded him. The night before, Heriberto had dreamed that his father was coming to get him, but there is quite a stretch from dream to reality, and the young man did not dare to believe that it was going to be fulfilled. But it was. Together, both father and son headed home.
Many miles from where they were there was a woman waiting, anxious for the moment of their reunion. Suddenly, in the darkness of the night, the shadow of two walkers took shape before her eyes. With a trembling soul, she got up to see again the face of her son Heriberto after seven years of pain. When their emotions calmed down, he told them what had happened.
Far from his home, Heriberto had gotten together with a married woman, and the husband decided to kill both of them when he found out that she was unfaithful to him. On the night for which he had planned the murder, the young woman was with her mother, and even though she begged Heriberto to go home with them, he decided not to do so. Ha-fray there, the husband jumped out of the darkness, blinded by jealousy, and killed the mother and left the young woman seriously wounded. When Heriberto got the news, he took his beloved to a hospital, but she died in his arms. He immediately disappeared into the mountains of Corcovado to flee from that man’s vengeance, but what he found in his flight was the limitless love of his father.
Heriberto began to read the Bible again and decided to publicly give himself to the God of his childhood through baptism. Who of us has not experienced an exodus somewhere along our lives? There are always moments when we flee from God, our family, the past, or perhaps fear We have all been prodigal daughters at some point in time. If that is your reality today, the Father is inviting you to go back home. Home is where you were before you got lost: in the assurance of people who love you and in the practice of a religion based on the truths of the gospel. The Lord has been patient with you, but He wants to have you again in His fold. You can always go back home, where He is waiting to embrace you.
