‘His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord’
(Matthew 25:2,1)
God wants each of us to serve our fellowmen any way we can. Helping others through selfless acts of service can simultaneously increase our own happiness and usefulness. Nevertheless, service depends on how we use our gifts and talents. What e of service is more suitable for me? How can I discover my gifts?
I (L) met Mr. Carlos while I managed my parents’ business in Mar del Plata (Argentina). He was an elderly man who rode his bike to the store every Friday to buy some honey. He made a living by purchasing different products and reselling them door-to-door. One day, he showed some interest in studying the Bible, so I offered to give him a Bible, if he accepted to study it with me. Months later, Mr. Carlos gave his heart to God and decided to devote his life to serve Him. He continued selling his products, but on the back of his bike, he placed an announcement promoting Bible study classes, classes to stop smoking or any other activity organized by his church. If someone were interested, he would give them a leaflet and explain to them how to get to the meetings. He always had something to share with the people who had greater needs than he did. For years, he kept thorough records of topics e studied. In time, he became an elder of the church; he was always seen at the church entrance, warmly welcoming those who came to God’s house.
Jesus taught that God has given gifts and talents to each individual: «And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability» (Matt. 25:15). We have all been given gifts that can be used to Serve God. It is our responsibility to use and multiply them for the honor of God.
If you want to know which type of service suits you best, start by doing what you already know, and from there, how to benefit others. Remember that in order to discover and develop your skills, you need to personally experiment in different fields of service. Sometimes, your friends or loved ones will see your abilities and will encourage you to use them. When you put your talents to good use, they multiply. Only then will you hear these words: «Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord» (Matt. 25:23)
