The tide was retreating beside a small coastal town in southern England. People gathering to watch the sunset noticed a Labrador retriever swimming toward a nearby pier. When the dog tried to climb out of the water, it discovered that wet seaweed made the wooden dock slippery. Time and time again, the animal tried to scamper onto the pier but failed to the point of exhaustion.
Suddenly another retriever ran the length of the dock, gave a sharp bark to catch the attention of the floundering pooch, leaped into the waves, and climbed back out with ease. The first animal swam to the same spot and was able to escape safely.
Miss Napier of Algiers in northern Africa sent the family dog to the market each morning. The animal would return with her order of twelve warm rolls in a basket and lay them at her feet.
One morning, though, she found only eleven rolls. It happened again and again. The baker said he put twelve in the basket. Then Miss Napier discovered that between her house and town was a mother dog with a litter of puppies. Every morning her pet would leave one roll with the hungry mother. She instructed the baker to put thirteen rolls in the basket, which he did until one day all thirteen arrived at the Napier home, signaling that the puppies were grown.
