«The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction» (Proverbs 1:7).
WISDOM
Francis Collins is a renowned American scientist who led the human genome research project. According to him, while studying his doctorate he considered himself an atheist who was established in his ideas. However, during his experience as a medical doctor in his youth, he was always struck by the faith some of his patients exercised when faced with illness, because instead of complaining and making demands from God, they found deep comfort and hope in Him. Later, the study of the human genome allowed him to glimpse God’s work and gave him arguments to confirm the existence of a Creator.
Everything in this world has a beginning, a foundation, a basis on which a building, an attitude, or research is built. What are we going to be based on? What will be the criteria that will define our destiny? I’m personally very happy when I see a child or young person that’s excited about knowledge. I see their sparkling eyes choosing new books in bookstores or excitedly looking at a painting in a museum or preparing a microscope to discover new horizons. There’s so much to study! Human beings have the great privilege of reaching unique levels of intelligence. Whales interesting is that knowledge is not an end in itself. It’s actually a means to build the greatest treasure of our lives: character.
The Bible says the foundation of knowledge is in knowing the sovereignty of the heavenly Father. The essence of knowledge comes from accepting His authority in this world. He’s placed limits on human beings through various natural laws; and He’s also given us the Ten Commandments, a reflection of His righteousness and character. Therefore, knowledge is one of the means God has given us so we may Imow His character. That means that math, chemistry, literature, music, psych010U, poetry, graphic design, biology or robotics, all contain elements that can connect you with the Creator of those areas of knowledge.
Today is the time to establish a belief system that will govern the rest of your life. What will it be? Where will you establish the criteria to make decisions, accept ideas or reject arguments? How will you evaluate the lessons you’ll receive in school or your work environment? It’s your privilege to decide. I invite you to place God at the center of your life.
