«Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat» (Proverbs 23:20)
Many times I’ve been asked about the importance of health for our spiritual lives. Unfortunately, some believers think the health message is «optional» and they don’t consider it very important. There are even those who openly mock the healthy lifestyle recommended by the Adventist Church, claiming that «it’s not relevant for salvation.» The key question is: Does food influence spiritual decisions? The answer is yes, because among other things it has to do with self-control.
Temperance or self-control is more important than people think. This virtue implies rationally regulating natural impulses, controlling your own desires and lusts. The following statement provides guidance, «One of the most deplorable effects of the original apostasy was the loss of man’s power of self-control. Only as this power is regained can there be real progress»—Ministry of Healing, ch. 8, p. 129.
Human beings fell into sin through coveting and not wanting to suppress the longing for that which God had forbidden. Whereas the Lord warned Adam and Eve about the consequences of disobeying, they both gave free rein to their wishes by heeding Satan’s attractive suggestions regarding the forbidden tree’s fruit. From then on, not restraining personal likes and wants has brought about terrible consequences in this world: from high-sounding words, to hatred, war, sexual perversions, homicides and other things. In turn, lack of self-control in spiritual life produces very low quality Christians who are problematic, nitpicky, sensitive to temptation, and many times resigned to hopelessness.
The way you eat is a means to develop self-control. What’s more, a healthy lifestyle will help you be strong and contribute to your spiritual growth during your passage through this world. Today, however, millions of people suffer from serious health problems due to their poor feeding habits. The worst thing is that there are more and more young people who can’t seem to control their appetite, even at the detriment of their own lives.
Ask the Lord this day have a healthy lifestyle and be moderate in every area of your life.
